Setting up DHCP for DNS registrations

If your environment includes mobile computers or devices that do not themselves support DNS registrations, you should let your DHCP Server handle these registrations. For this to properly work requires somewhat different configuration, or you will end up with multiple PTR records for the same IP address.

First you need to disable DNS registrations on the clients getting its address assignments from DHCP in TCP/IP properties, on the DNS tab by clearing the "Register this connection’s addresses in DNS" check box. If you have many clients this needs to be done on, you can create a Group Policy object setting this option. Be aware, if you use a GPO, you will need to create a new Organizational Unit in Active Directory Users and Computers, and link this GPO there. Any Client you place in this OU will not be able to register themselves in DNS. Do not make this setting in the default policies or it will apply to your static clients, too.

Move your DHCP clients to the OU.

I recommend installing and using the Group Policy Management Console for editing Group Policies.

Configure these settings on the DNS tab of the DHCP Server properties sheet.

Create a dedicated user account, with a strong non-expiring password.
